Supporting members with
Co-morbidities
Obesity is now regarded as one of the most important preventable challenges to health in the UK: the increasing risk of coronary heart disease, circulatory disease and diabetes with increasing body weight is well established.
Many of our members tell us that their general health has improved significantly since joining Slimming World and Food Optimising. In particular, weight loss helps:
- Reduce the risk of developing type 2 dependent diabetes
or improve diabetes control and reduce the need for medication
"After 4 weeks of attending Slimming World, my doctor said he was very optimistic that I could reduce, or even completely eliminate, the need for drugs to control my diabetes."
Read Raffi's letter here... - Reduce blood pressure and lower blood cholesterol levels,
which can lower the risk of heart disease and the need for medication - Reduce strain on the joints and improve back and joint pain
- Lungs function better and breathlessness improves
Losing just 10% of their body weight, and keeping it off, starts to bring considerable health benefits to people who are obese. Slimming World recognises this by awarding ‘Club 10’ membership to slimmers who lose 10% of their starting weight and maintain or better this loss over a 10 week period. This is just one of the many ways Slimming World facilitates and reinforces its members’ success.
Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, also caters for members with special dietary requirements or conditions affected by diet, including coeliac disease, lactose intolerance and IBS. Unlike many other diets or eating plans, the generosity and flexibility of Food Optimising, along with it’s focus on basic, everyday foods, means that it is suitable for practically every dietary requirement or preference.
Consultants and members have access to a variety of health factsheets to help them incorporate their dietary needs into Food Optimising. We always recommend members follow the medical and any dietary advice they have been given by their doctor or other health professional.
