Memoirs of a Slimmer

Following Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan and trying a ‘traditional’ diet can result in two very different experiences! The first week accounts of these two slimmers give a tantalising taster…

diary of a dieter...

Monday

Finally made the decision to do something about my weight – another fight with my jeans pushed me into it. Been into town and bought a book on the latest diet that’s been advertised. It’s all over the papers and loads of celebrities have lost weight following it - must be good.

Tuesday

Read the book cover to cover and I can’t make head nor tail of it. Don’t really understand how it works, but set menus for me to follow - should be easy enough.

Went to the supermarket and bought all the food I need – never heard of half of the stuff and I don’t even like some of it, but I have to stick to what it says in the book. Bit embarrassing having to carry the diet book round the supermarket with me but didn’t have time to write everything down. Nearly fainted at the checkout when I got the bill!

Wednesday

Finally started the diet today. Stomach was rumbling by 10 o’clock after a teeny breakfast but I’m not even allowed a banana! At lunchtime everyone else nipped out for a sandwich but I had to stay at my desk with my homemade salad (very dry - no dressing or mayonnaise!).

'I polished off my salad in 3 forkfulls!'I was ravenous by teatime and making the kid’s chicken nuggets and chips was torture! There’s no way they’d eat my diet food though. I tucked into my grilled chicken salad and polished it off in three forkfuls!

Looks like I’m going to bed with a rumbling stomach…

Thursday

It’s like Groundhog Day! I don’t like many of the breakfast choices on this diet so I’ve chosen the same one as yesterday – one piece of toast and half a grapefruit! I’m used to tucking into lots of tea and toast in a morning, with this diet I feel like I’ve already had a bad start to the day.

"Got on the scales before I went to bed – felt sure I must have lost at least 2lbs – after all, I’m eating half the amount I normally do! But no, not one measly lb! Go to bed feeling miserable."

Friday

On the scales again first thing – aarrrghh! Why haven’t I lost any weight?

Rushed around this morning getting my lunch ready to take to work – takes ages as I have to weigh everything. Didn’t know how much I liked cheese until I found out I’m not allowed any.

Saturday

Never realised there were so many food programmes on telly! If it’s not Nigella it’s Jamie, if it’s not Delia it’s Ainsley! They’re all waving their gooey desserts and scrumptious-looking dishes in my face!

Sunday

I’m so hungry! Can’t face it any more – Saturday is always takeaway night and I’m not going without. Feel terrible after tucking into a huge portion of fish and chips though!

'I only ever seem to be allowed half of everything...'Had to go shopping again today to top up all the fresh fruit and veg that’s needed to do this diet. It feels like a waste though because I only ever seem to be allowed half of anything, e.g. ‘half a banana’, ‘half a courgette’.

Watched enviously as hubby and the kids scoff their Sunday roast (prepared by me!). Daren’t have any though after last night’s slip-up – it’s a small jacket potato for me.

Monday

It’s D-day! Been on the diet a week – let’s see if all the hunger, pain and torture was worth all the effort!

Noooo! I’ve only lost one pound! Don’t believe it. That’s it I give up, I’m obviously one of those people that can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

the secrets of a Slimming World member

Monday

Another weekend of feeling uncomfortable with my weight – can’t seem to get clothes that look nice any more.

Never been to a slimming club before but figured there’s nothing to lose (except weight) so I took a deep breath and went along to the Slimming World group that’s just opened in the village hall.

Wow! Never expected it to be like this. Thought we’d all be sitting in front of a flipchart being told what we could and couldn’t eat.

The Consultant and all the members are lovely – it felt like they were really pleased to see me!

After finding out all about Food Optimising I was amazed – it sounds too good to be true. You can really eat all that food? The only thing that makes me believe it is the picture of our Consultant Claire before she lost six stones herself!

Tuesday

'I had a huge breakfast!.'So pleased with myself! I started Food Optimising right from today – realised I’ve got loads of stuff in the cupboards that fit into the plan. For breakfast I had poached eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans! I didn’t even get hungry again until lunchtime where I shocked everyone with my massive pasta salad!

Never felt so excited about losing weight!

Wednesday

Beginning to think this is too easy to be true! I don’t have to weigh anything – if I get hungry I can just grab some Free Food!

Did the weekly shop today and found I actually saved money because I bought loads of basic items for making meals, when normally I’d buy ready-made things, like lasagne.

'I made a delicious Food Optimising lasagne!'Made a Food Optimising-version of lasagne using Quorn mince, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, pasta sheets and fromage frais and it went down a treat! I couldn’t believe the whole family were tucking
into it!

Thursday

Faced my first ‘trial’ today – it was someone’s birthday at work and there were cakes galore! On previous diets I’ve had to flatly refuse any ‘treats’ but with Food Optimising I know that I can have a bit of what I fancy. I had a piece of cake and I didn’t even want to pick on things during the afternoon because I was so full from my mega BLT sandwich I had at lunchtime!

Friday

It’s our usual takeaway night tonight but I’m not at all worried! Already planned what I’m going to have – boiled rice instead of egg-fried and a chicken chop suey – yum!

"I already feel better – don’t know if I’ve lost weight yet but I’ve got loads of energy and I can’t stop smiling!"

Saturday

Went shopping today in town – had a browse at all the beautiful clothes I’ll be able to fit into soon. When it came to lunch time I devoured a huge jacket potato and baked beans from the potato van.

Planning on cooking everyone a real treat tonight – steak and chips – Food Optimising style!

Sunday

'Roast dinner with all the works!'A roast dinner with all the works – dry roast potatoes, parsnips, Yorkshire pudding, beef, carrots and gravy that’s what we all tucked into today. Hubby can’t believe that I’m allowed to eat all this – he thinks I won’t have lost any weight. Bit worried now – what if he’s right?

Monday

Yipeee! I’m writing this with the biggest beam on my face! Went to group tonight and found out I’ve lost, wait for it… 5lbs! Wow I can’t believe it!

I wasn’t the only one either – I stayed for Image Therapy and loads of people had lost 2lbs or more even though they’ve been members for a while. Picked up lots of recipes from everyone plus lots more tips to test out!

Can’t understand why everyone doesn’t join Slimming World!
