I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago, due to me being well overweight. I also suffered a heart attack a few years ago. When I visited my heart consultant I was advised that I may need open heart surgery if I didn't lose at least a stone in 2 months.
Nine weeks after joining Slimming World I reached my Club 10 target, losing 10% of my start weight. My blood sugar levels have stabilised and most importantly I haven't had to use any heart sprays for over two months, when I was using them at least three times a day before. I’m no longer in the high risk category of having a heart attack. I feel as though Slimming World has been instrumental in giving me back my life.

3. Lower blood cholesterol levels which are associated with increased risk from heart disease.
I was told that if I lost 10% of my body weight my cholesterol level would reduce. I took this with a 'pinch of salt' - how wrong I was. On achieving my Club 10 I had my cholesterol checked. At one time it was above 8 but with daily medication the level dropped slowly to 5.6. Thanks to my weight loss, when I got my latest test results back I couldn't believe it – it’s dropped to 4.2 and I’ve been discharged from my consultant!

Before I lost weight I did no exercise at all. Now I run 6-8 miles 3 or 4 times a week, I cycle 25 miles 2 or 3 times a week and I walk my dog 4 miles every day. The wake-up call came when at 28 a smear test picked up pre-cancerous cells in my cervix. I was horrified when the doctor referred to me as morbidly obese and said that my size meant I had a greater chance of developing cancer. I had a minor operation, but I knew this wouldn’t be the end of my health problems. My weight was getting in the way of my life.
