Perk up your cup: A weight loss friendly coffee guide

Happy National Cappuccino Day! Who’s up for celebrating with a steaming cup of fresh coffee? Whether you brew it at home or order it out, losing weight doesn’t mean giving up your favorite hot beverage. You can enjoy freshly ground, instant, Americano or espresso when you’re following Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, called Food Optimizing—just add a dash of skim milk if drinking it black’s not your thing. Ahead are a few more easy ways to get your caffeine fix—at home or on the go—without losing sight of your weight loss goals.

Spice it up
Instead of relying on flavored creamers (which can be loaded with sugar and fat), turn to your spice cabinet. Sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin pie spice over your cup of joe, or add a few drops of vanilla or peppermint extract to a freshly brewed pot. You can also add spices like ground cinnamon directly to the grounds before brewing to infuse your whole batch: Add ½ teaspoon for every ¾ cup of ground coffee.

Froth it up
Become your own barista by investing in an electric milk frother. This handheld device can be found for less than $10 and elevates the average mug simply by creating a bit of foam. You can even use it to make cappuccinos and lattes—just add a splash of milk or dairy-free alternative from your Healthy Extra allowance.

Tailor it up
Sometimes, only a professionally made cuppa will do. As always when eating (or drinking!) out, decide what you’re going to have beforehand so you can order your slimming-friendly choice with confidence. If you’ve decided on something with milk or syrup, ask the barista how much will be added to your brew so you can decide if you’d like to customize your order. Opt for low Syn sugar-free syrups to add sweetness and variety without excess sugar, and ask about toppings—little extras can add up to pose a risk to your weight loss. Another option is to ask for a “short” or 8-oz. drink, so you can get your caffeine fix in a smaller amount.

Whether you like your coffee first thing in the morning, or as an afternoon pick-me-up, know you can enjoy your daily cup of coffee and keep your weight loss on track!
