Putting an end to weight loss FOMO
When it comes to losing weight, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out—especially in an Instagram-everything culture, where one scroll of your feed reveals snaps of parties, carefree dinners, and over-the-top ice cream sundaes! Here are three strategies to keep in your back pocket for when those “FOMO” (fear of missing out) moments happen.
1) Make plans that don’t revolve around food. Now that the weather is warming up, it’s easier to find ways to spend time with family and friends that don’t involve a meal. Head outdoors to walk a local nature trail, take a bike ride, or relax outside with a friend or a good book.
For events where food is plentiful, think like Slimming World member Didi, from New Haven, Connecticut, who has lost 7 lbs. so far: “I have changed my perspective about parties and social events. The event is not about food. It’s about seeing family and friends, enjoying different people and different places.”
2) Keep your focus on your goal. When the going gets tough, remember to check in on why you want to lose weight in the first place. “The important thing is to keep your focus on the goals you have for yourself, and ask yourself the question: ‘Is the ice cream as important as reaching my target weight?’” says Yvonne Sanders, head of operations for Slimming World U.S. There’s room in Slimming World’s eating plan for everyday treats, so there’s no need to pass up a little of what you love or feel deprived—though losing weight with Slimming World will ultimately mean making choices to support a long-term healthy lifestyle.
Help make those goals visible by creating a collage of what weight loss means to you—maybe it’s the ability to keep up with your kids, or walk into a store and try on whatever you like. Or think of a mantra or phrase you can repeat—like good things happen by choice, not by chance—for when times get challenging.
3) Lean on group support. Even with the best-laid plans and laser focus on your goals, it makes a huge difference to know you’re not going through this alone. Having a group of like-minded friends who can offer support and inspiration for the ups and downs of a weight loss journey is what you’ll find in weekly online meetings as a Slimming World member. And it will also help you stay motivated and stick with your goals, all the way to your target weight. Sanders says, “Sharing goals with your group renews your commitment each week—not just to the group, but to yourself, too.” And that’s definitely something you won’t want to miss out on!
