Spring clean your weight loss mindset
As we move towards summertime—with longer daylight hours, lighter clothes, vacations, and swimsuits on the horizon—losing weight tops the list of goals for many of us. If that’s on your list, does that mean it’s time to dust off your gym clothes and prepare for a long, lonely road of deprivation to lose weight? Not with Slimming World!
Losing weight with Slimming World is all about moving your mindset from restrictive diets to a livable, healthy lifestyle. You’ll make small, achievable changes to the way you shop, cook and eat, add activity to your day when you’re ready, and have support every step of the way. Give your weight loss mindset a “spring cleaning” and refocus your weight loss goal as a positive journey to a healthier, happier you, with these three tips.
1) Write a “win” list. Chances are, you’ve already succeeded at a lot of challenging things in your life—and weight loss is no different. “A challenge is hard, but not impossible,” says J. Graham Thomas, Ph.D., a member of the Slimming World Advisory Board and associate professor of the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Write down a list of achievements you’re proud of—getting a degree, raising a child, buying a house, or scoring a promotion. Then visualize yourself adding weight loss to your tally. “Focusing on the positive can help you prove to yourself you can do this,” Thomas says.
2) Shift your perspective. Instead of thinking about what you miss out on when you’re losing weight, think of what your new, slimmer lifestyle will look like—it could be a confidence boost, more energy to run after your kids, or fitting into a smaller clothing size. Framing your weight loss as a new way of life, rather than as a diet, makes it exciting to get started.
A mindset shift can also apply to what you can eat when you’re losing weight. With Slimming World, there are many everyday foods you can eat freely until you’re satisfied: fruit and veggies, lean meat, eggs, and also pasta, potatoes and rice (yes, really!). There’s no need to resign yourself to tiny portions, or ban your favorite foods either—our plan has wiggle room to have a little bit of chocolate (or whatever your special treat is). “You can participate in everything and not feel left out,” says Yvonne Sanders, head of Slimming World USA.
3) Lean on your online Slimming Group. Rather than steeling yourself for being alone and singled out on your weight loss journey, know that there’s a world of support waiting for you. Each week as a Slimming World member you can join a weekly online meeting, led by a trained Slimming World Consultant, and throughout the week you can post messages to keep in touch with your fellow group members. Your online Slimming Group will celebrate your successes, offer inspiring food ideas, help you to get back on track if you stumble a bit—and remind you that you’re not alone on your positive journey to a healthier, happier you.
