The countdown to Cinco de Mayo is on! And with just a couple of days to go, we’re looking forward to enjoying all the delicious foods that Mexican cuisine is known for. Whether you’re navigating the restaurant menu or throwing a fiesta at home, here’s how Slimming World’s flexible and effective healthy eating plan, called Food Optimizing, can help you celebrate in style without losing sight of your weight loss goals.

Cinco de Mayo the Slimming World way

Check out the menu ahead of time
If you’re heading to a restaurant to celebrate, take some advice from Yvonne Sanders, head of Slimming World USA, and plan ahead. “It’s so important to look at the menu beforehand and figure out what you’re going to order,” she says. Scan the menu for grilled or broiled options, and go for choices loaded with veggies, lean protein, and plain rice, like fajitas or a burrito bowl, without the tortilla wraps. While these options may not be 100% on-plan with Slimming World, they’ll help steer your weight loss in the right direction.

Make small, smart swaps
Whether you’re eating out or staying in, swap out high-fat ingredients with their lighter, just-as-tasty counterparts to protect your weight loss. Instead of sour cream, top salads and burrito bowls with a dollop of cooling plain fat-free Greek yogurt, and opt for grilled and broiled lean meat instead of fried and breaded options. Dip fresh-cut veggies into salsas and bean dips, instead of fried tortilla chips. Sparkling water with fresh lime is refreshing and safest for your weight loss, though if you’re really craving a margarita, opt for a regular instead of frozen, as frozen margaritas are often larger and can have extra sugar from blended fruit.

Whip up Mexican favorites at home
Cooking at home is a surefire way to stay on plan, since you know exactly how your food is prepared. Top salads with traditional taco fillings like mouthwatering beef chili. Or turn a burrito into a hearty and filling rice bowl by skipping the tortilla and going heavy on the fresh veggies, like in our carne asada bowls above. In the mood for nachos? Give the traditional dish a new lease of life by combining all of those great flavors into a family-friendly pasta. And don’t forget to whip up a big batch of homemade pico de gallo loaded with fresh tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and lime juice!
