“Now my smile is genuine”*
Anna Cunnell, 32, joined Slimming World after gaining weight from her pregnancies. Now Anna’s 84 pounds* lighter, and happier than ever.
“Growing up, I was an overweight teenager who could never wear the same beautiful clothes as my friends. Instead of going out with them on weekends, I’d hide away at home. My weight affected my mental health, too. I suffered with anxiety and depression, and spending nights in tears feeling bad about myself only made it worse.
“When I became pregnant at 19 with my oldest son, Benjamin, my weight continued to escalate. I’d eat chocolate and chips for two, and this didn’t change by the time my daughter, Summer, was born two years later. After having children, I weighed more than 250 pounds. At one point I need crutches to help me walk because of my extra weight.
“I wanted to lose weight to feel happy and healthy in time for my 30th birthday, and to be an energetic mother for my children. A friend of mine had had wonderful results with Slimming World and suggested I join. When I learned how Food Optimizing, the healthy eating plan, worked, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to follow—especially when I had such a busy life. In my first week I lost 8 pounds!
Finding Food Optimizing
“Before Slimming World, I wouldn’t eat any breakfast and would be famished by 11 a.m., so I’d have chocolate or chips midmorning, then a store-bought sandwich and chips for lunch and takeout for dinner. Now I began my day with an omelet filled with mushrooms and tomatoes, or waffles made with a Slimming World recipe, topped with lots of fruit. Lunch would be tuna or egg over a big salad, and in the evening, I’d make homemade burgers with Slimming World fries and a large side salad. In between meals I’d snack plenty of my favorite fruit.
“Food Optimizing fits perfectly with my busy family life. We all eat the same meals, which makes the plan easier to follow—I never feel like I’m on a diet. Small changes also make a big difference when Food Optimizing. I now use light mayo instead of full-fat, I make my own Slimming World fries rather than getting takeout, and I opt for sugar-free or diet drinks.
“I lost 98 pounds in a year and I couldn’t have been happier! Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant with my third child, Jacob. I stopped finding time for Slimming World—I figured I could keep going on my own.
Losing my way
“Without the support and motivation of my group I drifted back into my old eating habits. I gained back all the weight I’d lost and more, yet I would eat to make myself feel better. It was a vicious circle.
“On the day of Jacob’s birth, the anesthetist made a statement that shocked me. ‘When you registered with us your BMI was in a healthy range, and now you’re dangerously overweight.’ I laughed it off, but deep down I was devastated. Since I’d stopped weighing in every week before my group, I was in denial about how much I’d gained back.
“When I looked at the first photos of Jacob and me, I only saw how big I’d become, and not that I’d just had a beautiful baby boy. My recovery was even more difficult because of the extra weight that I was carrying. I spent most days in tears, feeling like I wasn't good enough for my children. My anxiety was worse than ever and I needed medication to manage it.
“Six months after Jacob was born, my friend invited me to her black-tie 30th birthday party. As much as I wanted to go, I made an excuse not to because I felt like a mess. That’s when I decided I’d had enough and rejoined Slimming World.
Rediscovering the real me
"It didn't take me long to get back into the swing of Food Optimizing, and I loved rediscovering my favorite recipes and finding new ones. I felt so motivated being back in my group, with everyone so friendly and welcoming. It was easy to use the app on the go to record my progress, and any time I needed inspiration, I’d read members’ success stories. I recently achieved my Body Magic bronze award, too, for all the walking I do—I hardly ever sit down!
“This time, I lost 84 pounds in a year. I feel amazing! All my confidence has come back. I’m so much happier with family and friends—I feel like I’m finally the mom my children deserve. I can run and play with my youngest without tiring, and walk without aching.
“The biggest benefit of losing weight for me is I’ve been able to come off my anxiety medication, and I feel in control. I’m sure feeling much happier in my own skin helped. Now I wake up and go to bed with a genuine smile on my face. My whole family felt the effects of my anxiety and depression, and now they finally have the happy, healthy, real Anna back.”
