“I’m like a new man after losing 288 lbs”*

At over 484 lbs and with a raft of health problems, Dave felt as if he was trapped in a shrinking world. Now healthier and fitter than ever, he’s broadened his horizons…and he couldn’t be happier!

“Moments after stepping out my front door and walking along the sidewalk, I paused, exhausted. I realized I couldn’t make it to the end of my street. That was when I knew something had to change. My health was increasingly affected by my weight: I had type 2 diabetes, borderline hypertension, crippling joint pain, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. I went out so rarely, except for work, that I was close to becoming a recluse. Now my mobility was seriously affected, too—as I was getting bigger, my world was shrinking.

"I can't remember a time apart from a brief period in my late teens when I wasn't classed as clinically obese. I’d tried a range of diets, but none had helped me learn healthy ways to eat and cook in real life. And each time, as soon as I’d gone back to eating regularly, I’d regain all the weight I’d lost, and more.

"I’d tried the Slimming World plan before, but truth be told, my mind wasn’t in the right place to follow it wholeheartedly. I remembered how friendly the Consultant had been and I resolved to try it again. When I saw the available group times just after 10 a.m., I discovered there was one at 10:30 a.m.—I took that as a sign from the universe to rejoin.

"A huge shock came when I stepped on the scale to record my starting weight. When I discovered I was nearly 42 lbs heavier than I’d expected, I couldn’t believe what I’d done to my body. That evening, I’m not ashamed to say I cried. Afterwards, though, I felt like I’d had a small victory—this was the start of me taking control of my weight.

"The following day I vowed to embrace Slimming World’s Food Optimizing eating plan to the fullest, and I filled my kitchen with Free Food—fruit and vegetables, lean meat and seafood, pasta, potatoes, rice and eggs, that can be eaten without any weighing, counting or measuring.

"I liked how Food Optimizing encouraged eating healthy, filling food that I prepared myself, rather than relying on pre-made meals and processed foods. With Free Food I knew I could make lots of my favorites, like chili, stir-fries, pasta dishes, and hearty salads, so I wouldn’t feel hungry or deprived. It was working, too, as I saw the weight come off, week after week!

"It wasn’t long before I began to share my recipes with the rest of my Slimming Group. I loved seeing how the group drew strength from my successes and supported me during tough times. Sometimes, it seemed like the people in my Slimming Group cared more about me than I even did myself! Our Consultant was like the super glue that held us together, keeping us smiling and motivated. I always felt so much better after a group meeting.

"I wanted to do as much as I could to improve my health, so I started walking a little more each day. I went to my local park and walked to the first bench. When I felt I could do that comfortably, I walked to the second bench, and so on—I called it my ‘bench pressing’! It was such an easy way to exercise, and it didn’t cost me a thing. Then, I started leaving my car at home and chose to walk as much as I could. Now I regularly cover around 10 miles a day. My friends learned that the only way that they'd get to spend time with me is if we went for a walk somewhere!

"Soon after I reached my initial target weight of 203 lbs, my doctor told me I could come off my medication. My blood sugar was in a healthy range, meaning I no longer showed type 2 diabetes symptoms. I also no longer needed to wear glasses—an unexpected side effect of my reduced blood sugar levels.

"The list of ways my life has changed since losing weight is nearly endless: I can fit into the seat of any car and on buses, trains and planes. I can buy clothes at any store and put my own socks on easily. I’ve walked over 6,000 miles cumulatively since joining Slimming World—that’s almost the equivalent of New York to San Francisco and back again. I’ve even climbed a mountain! And best of all, I’ve never spent more quality time with friends, family and people that I care about. My world isn’t shrinking anymore…it’s getting richer and fuller by the day.”
