“My future’s bright”*

Gaining weight put Ellie’s life on pause. Now 37 pounds* lighter and with unshakeable confidence, she’s making the most of every moment.

“Throughout my childhood and early teens, I’d always been slim and loved the fresh, tasty food Dad used to cook for us at home. Then, at 16, I got a job in the pizza restaurant where Mom worked as a manager, and would eat at least one 10-inch pizza on every shift. Now, with my own money to spend, too, there was nothing to stop me from picking up fast food between classes, treating myself to meals out with friends, or getting takeout on weekends.

“My body changed quickly and I went up three dress sizes in around 18 months. All my friends were slim and fashionable and I started comparing myself to them whenever we went out. I felt so self-conscious. Then, my whole world turned upside down when my grandad passed away and not long after, Mom and Dad split up. I developed anxiety and depression and felt like I couldn’t cope, and I dropped out of school for a while.

“Occasionally I tried to slim down, usually by trying whichever fad promised the fastest results: weight loss supplements, waist-cinching corsets, and I even downloaded an app to slim down my photos on my phone. Nothing made me feel better.

Discovering Slimming World

It was my older sister, Emma, who helped me discover that losing weight didn’t have to be torture. ‘I lost 14 pounds with Slimming World,’ she told me. ‘You should join with me.’ I was amazed to find I could eat pasta and lose weight—it sounded like the perfect plan for me!

“Before joining group, I’d usually begin the day with a huge bowl of sugary cereal. Lunch was pizza or a sandwich, then for dinner I’d make pasta with a creamy sauce. Now I started having a big plate of eggs with tomatoes and mushrooms for breakfast, followed by fat-free plain yogurt and fruit, a tomato-based pasta dish for lunch, and stir-fries with beef, noodles and lots of veggies for dinner. In a few weeks, I lost 7 pounds.

“Sadly, life started to get in the way. I began law school and one of my classes clashed with my group meeting time, so I stopped joining. Without support, I lost all motivation and gained back the weight I’d lost and was on the verge of hiding myself away again.

Renewed motivation

“That’s when something amazing happened and I started looking at things differently. I was having fast food one evening, when it occurred to me that I actually craved the fresh, healthy food I’d been cooking while Food Optimizing, and the way it had made me feel. I realized I had a choice. I could continue to trap myself in a cycle of eating foods I didn’t even enjoy, then punishing myself with restrictive diets and fads, or I could make a positive change.

“‘This time I want to focus on changing my whole attitude to food,’ I said to my Consultant, Clare. I threw myself into it, making the most of Free Foods—healthy, filling, everyday foods you can eat in unlimited amounts on the Slimming World program. I found tons of recipe ideas on the website and in my Slimming Group meetings to help me stay motivated.

Feeling confident in my future

“The weight came off steadily—and what a difference I felt! I was so pleased and confident that I could hush those critical voices in my head. When I turned 21, I celebrated by going to a music festival with a couple of friends. I went completely off plan but I realized a gain doesn’t have to mean giving up. I got straight back to Food Optimizing and a few months later, I went on to achieve my target weight of 136 pounds—37 pounds lost! I’ve gone from feeling completely out of control around food to eating healthy meals and loving them. I’m much more active, too, and I think that really helps me stay upbeat.

“Everything has changed for me since losing weight, including the way I look, feel and act. When I’m out with my friends, I no longer feel the need to compare myself to them. Short skirts, skinny jeans...for the first time I’m happy with whichever outfit I choose. It’s not just about having a size-4 figure that I don’t mind showing off—my wardrobe oozes confidence because I do, too. I’m now finishing law school and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring!”
