After being humiliated about her weight while on her first trip with friends, Jodie Rigby-Mee lost a life-changing 84lbs*—and she’s kept it off for 11 years. Here’s how Jodie’s discovered the confidence to become a flight attendant and live a full, happy life.
"I was just 17 and on my first girls' vacation when I heard a group of boys make cruel comments about my weight. It took my breath away and I ended up back in the hotel room in tears.
"When I joined Slimming World, I thought everyone would judge me for being so big at such a young age. The truth is that you’re on this journey with people who all feel exactly the same way as you do and who totally understand what you’re going through.
"I tried other diets in the past but none of them taught me anything about food—I'd 'spend' all my allowances on unhealthy foods or end up starving hungry on shakes and pills. This was completely different.
"I loved receiving awards for every 5lbs I lost and for being active—it’s amazing how motivating it can be to have something to work towards! Anything that raises your heart rate counts as activity—even everyday jobs like vacuuming and mowing the lawn. It made exercise seem much easier and more realistic.

Jodie’s top tips
Lean on your Slimming Group for help—even though I’ve reached my target weight, I attend my group every week—I’m still human, after all! The peer support is invaluable for inspiration and support as I plan for the week ahead.
Keep a food diary—this is a great way to refocus if you ever need it, such as after a vacation. It helps you to keep track of what you’re eating, and seeing it in black and white can help you to feel back in control.
Find new ways to treat yourself—I’ve learned food is fuel, not comfort, and I try not to reward myself with food. Instead I’ll treat myself to a bunch of flowers or some new clothes—I love shopping now that I’m a size 6!
