“It was the 28th of December 2017 and after all the holiday celebrations I had attended in the past couple of days I woke up feeling tired and sluggish. I managed to get out of bed to start my day, but as I looked in the mirror I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. I hated the way I looked and most of all I hated the fact that I felt so unhealthy.
My Weight Loss Past
“My weight had been a struggle my entire life. Fifteen years ago, when I was at my heaviest—350lbs—I managed to lose quite a large amount of weight with a weight loss program but found that I just couldn’t keep it off. All the counting and measuring I had to do was just not working with my day to day life. And to be honest, it wasn’t teaching me how to eat properly. I’d just deprive myself all day so I could use my points for my usual junk food later on. Soon enough the weight was back.
“As a programmer, my days are spent at a desk in front of a computer and that was where I wanted to stay. I felt ashamed to walk down the hall at work. I didn’t want anyone to see me after I gained all the weight back. I stopped going to the movie theater because the seats were too tight, and eating out at restaurants became a real struggle because I couldn’t fit in booths or chairs with arms. Not only was I low in energy, my self-esteem was rock-bottom, too. I didn’t even want to leave the house.
Discovering Slimming World
“Standing in front of my mirror on that December morning, I felt defeated. I was 272lbs and although I had tried everything I could think of, nothing had worked. With the hope of making 2018 the year that I finally found the weight loss plan that stuck, I started up my browser and clicked on the search button. That was when I found Slimming World. Although the name was new to me, I thought what the heck. I had nothing to lose but weight.
“As soon as I signed up, I was blown away. When I looked at the extensive list of Free Food that I could enjoy I thought there was no way I could eat all of that and still lose weight! I knew this was something entirely different to anything I’d tried before and my first weekly online group proved it. My Consultant, Annette, was amazing and my fellow group members were so understanding and supportive—especially on my fourth week when I had a setback and gained 8lbs. Having the group there let me know that I was not alone. I started my fifth week with renewed motivation and before I knew it I was 30 pounds* lighter.
