“I’m the me I always wanted to be.” *
Mom-of-one Sophie lost 56 lbs.* and discovered a new way of eating for life. Now she’s loving her newfound confidence and energy and is back in her dancing shoes.
“I’ve struggled with my weight since I was in school. I was always considered ‘the curvy girl’ and I tried to hide my insecurities behind a bubbly, outgoing personality. I loved dance lessons and I even won a scholarship when I was 14 to go to a performing arts school—though my weight started to affect that, too.
“One of the teachers took me aside and told me that I was talented, but I needed to lose weight if I was going to make it. I turned to food to help me feel better, only that led to a vicious cycle of gaining more weight. After a while I felt so low and I didn’t think I could ever lose the weight, and I gave up on my dream of becoming a dancer. My asthma also worsened during this time, so badly that I was frequently hospitalized for severe asthma attacks.
“I tried shakes, meal replacements, and calorie counting, and I’d go to bed feeling hungry and deprived, which only led me to comfort-eat even more. My family was always so supportive of my attempts to lose weight, but nothing stuck long-term.
“At 22 I became pregnant with my daughter, Vogue. Soon after I gave birth, I went out for a friend’s birthday party. My heart sank when I saw the pictures—I couldn’t believe how big I looked. I was so worried that it would be shared on social media, and in that moment I knew I didn’t ever want to feel that way again.
Enjoying healthy, filling food
“That was when my mom suggested I join Slimming World with her. At first I was shocked at how much I could eat while still losing weight on Slimming World’s healthy eating plan. Not only can you have fruit and vegetables, you can eat pasta, rice, potatoes, and lean meat—all without counting or measuring anything.
“I loved that I could still eat my favorites like spaghetti with meat sauce, burgers and fries, and curries, made with a few simple, healthy swaps…and there was even room in my day to have some chocolate or wine if I wanted it. It really helped me rethink my relationship with food and I felt so much better for it. I went to bed each night full and satisfied, and I loved knowing that I was cooking easy, healthy meals for my daughter, too.
“I was nervous about joining a group, but the friendliness of my fellow members made me feel instantly at ease. My group has been such a fantastic source of support and motivation along the way. It’s a great place for recipe inspiration and ideas, and so many of my group members have become good friends.
Rediscovering a love for activity
“Losing weight inspired me get back into the swing of some activity. I used to drive everywhere—now I walk as much as I can, and my asthma has improved so much I rarely need to reach for my inhaler. Being active also helps me keep up with Vogue. Now I feel like I have all the energy in the world to run after her, and I love taking her on long walks and adventures.
“When Vogue was about 10 months old, I wanted to find a job close to home and with flexible hours. I applied to be a skincare specialist, and I think my new sense of self-belief helped—I got the job! Now that I’ve lost weight I feel so much more confident in my trim uniform, and it’s easier to be on my feet all day and zip around town for deliveries.
“I recently dusted off my dancing shoes and joined a class in my area. It’s been years since I last did any kind of dancing...now that I feel slim, happy and confident, I’m dreaming of being back on stage again!”
